EPHESUS

Ephesus is one of the most visited ancient Greek cities of Turkey. Some of the most interesting pieces from this once vibrant city can be found in the Ephesus Museum. The latter is home to historical artefacts from Ephesus. Amongst these are several sculptures, with personalities of Greek mythology and history. These include statues of Artemis, Eros and Socrates.  The museum also houses a special collection of ancient gold, silver and  copper coins. A throng of jewels from antiquity to Ottoman times is another worthwhile example of the historic objects found in this museum. The Ephesus Archaeological Museum is 80 km away from the center of Smyrna.

The Agora Open Air Museum is located in the Namazgah neighborhood of Smyrna. This museum offers visitors another chance to explore ancient history. Monuments, statues and altars are some of the ancient objects found in the “Agora.” The latter was the center of trade,  religion and politics in cities of ancient Greece.

CESME CASTLE AND ARCHAEOLOGİCAL MUSEUM

Built by Sultan Bayezid II in 1508, Çeşme Castle with its 6  bastions and moat system is an attractive historical and architectural sight.  The castle has an archaeological museum with a wide array of historical artefacts that have been discovered in the region. These include,  320 archaeological objects, 126 ethnographic items, 31 ancient coins, which tallies up to 477 displayed artefacts. Çeşme Castle is also a cultural hub, as it plays host to festivals from the area, such as the Çeşme International Music Festival.

KLAZOMENAI ANCIENT CITY

Klazomenai is an ancient city located on the northern shore of Urla in the Çeşme  peninsula. The city was part of the Ionian League, a confederation of 12 cities that formed at the end of the Meliac War during the mid-7th century B.C.  Klazomenai is rich with history and was actually one of the first cities in the world to use silver coinage.  This ancient city is yet another interesting local historical site with countless of ancient artefacts.
